FAQ About

Reopening

the Library

Do you want your library to reopen? Trust us - we do, too! West Warwick Public Library is assessing guidelines from our consortium, town government, state government and governor, and the advice of health organizations around the world. We have introduced curbside pickup, dozens of virtual services, and recently limited computer access. Our awesome staff has been working in the building for weeks on projects and sanitation. This is all in hopes for a successful, cautious and optimistic transition back to "normal".

Here are some frequently asked questions that we have received. Please remember that our efforts and ability to reopen update almost hourly. Please check our updates page here for more information!

Q:

When are you reopening to the public?

A:

We have already begun reopening our doors to the public! We are now open 5 days a week for either curbside pickup of materials or limited computer access (each by appointment - see more about these services and how to use them by clicking here). However, the date of "reopening to normal" is not something we can know. This is tied to statewide reopening phases and RI library phases (click here to visit the OSLRI website to read more about this). Each library faces it's own challenges regarding building layout and staffing. The safety of our patrons and staff is of utmost importance to us. We will continue to steadily increase our offerings until such a time that we can reopen to the state we were before the COVID crisis. As always, check back here or on our Facebook page for the most current updates!

Q:

Stores are nearly reopen to "normal"... why not the library?

A:

There are many ways libraries differ from retail stores. Our functions serve not only to provide materials but also as a community center. Libraries are designed as a communal space whereas retail stores are designed to get you in and out. Because of this, the layout of the building proves problematic when keeping COVID regulations enforced. Libraries may host patrons for hours a day browsing, using computers, and even just hanging out. As such, we need to monitor and sanitize multiple surfaces beyond what our staffing would allow. We also have small enclosed spaces between our book cases that do not create a healthy environment for browsing at this time. As time goes on and we move through the phases outlined above, we will attempt to reopen to "normal" functions to the best of our ability!

Q:

What about summer programs and clubs in general?

A:

We've been successfully transitioning programs and clubs to digital meetings for the past months. Dungeons & Dragons campaigns, senior social hour, book clubs, crafts, story times... you name it. We've heard overwhelming positive feedback and COVID-19 may have changed the way we meet forever. That being said, in-person programs and clubs are not extinct! Going forward, these will return when it is safe to do so, likely with social distancing enforced.

Q:

I have a bunch of items I want to pickup / order / return. How can I?

A:

Our curbside service has seen great success! We've recently extended our pickup hours on Mondays and Wednesdays for those of you that have returned to work. Call (401) 828-3750 x 101 to schedule a time to come over and pick up your orders. See our catalog here to place holds. You can now place up to 10 holds. Our drop box has been reopened, too, and you can now return items at any time.

Q:

The library was my source for tax assistance. Now where can I go?

A:

AARP tax assistance apologizes for the inconvenience, but has partnered with 4 community centers around the state to continue tax help! Visit our tax assistance page by clicking here for information on each center. It is recommended that you call ahead and place documents in a zip-lock bag for drop off. These are all FREE to the public by appointment and operate nearly the same way our service did.

Q:

What about other stuff like the passport assistance program and notary services?

A:

We are following guidelines on the more personal, face-to-face services that we normally offer. As of right now, these services have been put on hiatus with hopes of returning as soon as we're allowed to open to limited capacity. We are not accepting passport applications in the near future, as there are significant delays to the process (see travel.state.gov for more info).
